OnCell Acquires SaaS Company, CultureSpots
Acquisition of CultureSpots will drive mobile tour app technology innovation for museums and galleries.
ROCHESTER, N.Y., June. 24, 2020–OnCell announced today it has acquired the software company, CultureSpots based in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, a respected competitor in the audio guide technology space for cultural institutions. OnCell pioneered the first self-guided mobile tour platform for cultural sites and historic destinations and allows organizations to offer their visitors immersive educational experiences using their smartphones and tablets.
For years, OnCell and CultureSpots have both succeeded in providing mobile tour solutions to museums and galleries everywhere. Using a visitor’s own smartphone device, both companies make it easy for visitors to engage, interact and explore without the hassle of additional hardware. Using the OnCell or CultureSpots platform institutions can also improve accessibility by implementing various language options and multimedia content.
OnCell was founded by entrepreneur Thomas Dunne, who has served as Chief Executive Officer and President since OnCell’s inception in 2006. Dunne, with over 25 years of experience in application development, telecommunications, and sales, has grown OnCell to a team of nearly 20 employees.
The acquisition strengthens OnCell’s position as a leader in the self-guided mobile tour space and amplifies its commitment to support the arts and cultural sector.
“We are excited to add CultureSpots’ customers to the OnCell family.” Said Thomas Dunne “They have a strong number of university art galleries, and museums and with this addition, we will have the opportunity to serve nearly 100 university museum clients.”
CultureSpots was founded by Cliff Stevens in 2014, with the mission to accelerate and broaden the adoption of smartphone-based mobile audio tours by small and midsize museums and galleries. “We’re arts and culture lovers, with an entrepreneurial mindset and technology chops, and we built CultureSpots for all the small to midsize arts and cultural organizations out there that we ourselves so enjoyed visiting and supporting,” Stevens said.
Dunne will remain President and CEO of OnCell and plans to support existing and new clients especially during these unprecedented times. “The use case for self-guiding tours is no longer a nice to have and this is even truer now during the pandemic. With new safety guidelines, museums, and galleries will rely on visitors to use their own devices and we’ll see cultural institutions delivering content in new and creative ways,” added Dunne.
OnCell provides a full range of mobile tour technologies for museums, parks, and cultural destinations. With a variety of interactive services such as a DIY app builder, native and web apps, audio guides, beacon tours, and games, OnCell helps organizations become mobile-friendly. As mobile communication experts who are passionate about the arts, outdoors, and education, the OnCell team has worked on over 3,000 projects both in the U.S. and internationally since its inception in 2006. www.oncell.com
In 2018, OnCell acquired Authentic, a New Zealand based company and in 2019 acquired TourBuddy, a Savannah, Georgia-based industry-leader in mobile tour technology.
CultureSpots built a highly-focused, easy-to-use mobile audio tour platform that has helped museums and galleries of all sizes provide engaging interpretive experiences. With little to no technology expertise, all kinds of organizations nationwide have leveraged CultureSpots including university art galleries, space museums, natural history museums, historic houses and many more. What was first launched by founder Cliff Stevens in 2011 as a gps-guided mobile audio tour app for iPhone called “Lokadot” later evolved into a robust, intuitive and affordable SaaS platform. Relaunched as CultureSpots in 2014, the platform has since been enjoyed by thousands of visitors using only their own smartphones and an Internet connection.
